Apple Dump Cake

Welcome to Ms. Nicolette's Pantry! So happy to have you here and in the kitchen with your kiddo adding something new to your lifestyle.

I have hand-picked recipes and activities that are easy for you to create at home with the help of your children. Based on their age you can decide which tasks they can help you with, and which ones they should let an adult do. Make this a learning experience for you both - let your child explore the baking/cooking process and explain each item, ingredient, and step to them, and watch how your child interacts!

I apologize for what felt like a hefty delay in posting a new recipe. Life has been busy. Between working at Goddard and recently purchasing our first home, our days and hours are packed full! The holidays are expected to be back in full swing, so keep an eye out for all the fun to come.

Read to the end for special notes about this recipe!

Tools Needed:

  • 9 x 13" pan

  • Mixing bowl

  • Cooking spray

  • Spatula

  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients:

  • 1 standard size box white or yellow cake mix

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cut into small pieces

  • 2 20 ounce cans apple filling

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 12 ounce jar caramel sauce

  • Optional: vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray the baking dish lightly with cooking spray.

  2. Dump apple filling into the mixing bowl. Tip: this is fun and easy for the kiddos to do, just use caution for any sharp edges on the cans!

  3. Add the cinnamon and mix until evenly coated.

  4. Dump apple pie filling into baking dish.

  5. Sprinkle dry cake mix directly on top of apple mix, spreading as level as possible. Tip: do NOT mix!

  6. Evenly place butter pieces on top of the dry cake mix. Tip: ensure butter pieces cover as much of the top as possible to avoid any dry spots after baking.

  7. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.

  8. Immediately after removing from oven, drizzle caramel sauce over top. Tip: this is a good step for the kids to do, just remind them the baking dish is very hot!

  9. Cool for at least 5 minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream while warm!

  10. Enjoy!

NOTES:

  • You are more than welcome to make your own apple pie filling if you’d like. Purchasing already made filling cuts down on the time and prep work, though!

  • If you prefer to add, chopped nuts will bake up perfectly in this dessert as well.

  • If you do not want to use vanilla ice cream to serve with, whipped cream is a good substitution.

  • Be sure to wash hands before and after working in the kitchen, especially when handling raw ingredients.

  • Have fun and enjoy!
